Our Practice
A practice built around listening
Bua Counsel was established to serve families navigating significant legal questions — with patience, discretion, and counsel that respects the complexity of each situation.

How we came to be, and why we work the way we do
Bua Counsel was founded in Chiang Mai to address a clear need: families dealing with adoption procedures, property separation, and long-term planning often found themselves navigating Thai legal processes without counsel who both understood the law and took time to understand them.
The practice takes its name from the lotus — bua in Thai — which grows in still water and carries, in Thai culture, an association with clarity emerging from difficulty. It is a fitting image for the work we do. Families come to us at moments that are rarely straightforward, and our role is to bring order and clarity to what can feel uncertain.
We are a small practice by design. This means that the person who handles your initial conversation is the same person who will advise on your matter. There are no handoffs to junior staff, no situations where you must re-explain your circumstances. We believe this continuity matters in family legal work, where context is everything.
Our work is concentrated in three areas: adoption procedure counsel, property division for separating couples, and long-term family legal engagement for families with ongoing needs. We do not take on matters outside these areas, which means we develop genuine depth rather than spreading thinly across every family law question.

Our Standards
How we approach every matter
Professional Confidentiality
Everything shared with us is held under full legal professional privilege. We do not discuss client matters outside the engagement, and your information is never shared with third parties without explicit instruction.
Thorough Documentation
We prepare all documentation carefully and review each submission before it leaves our office. Errors in family legal filings cause delays that affect real lives — we take that seriously.
Thai Legal Compliance
All procedures we assist with are conducted in full compliance with Thai law. We maintain current knowledge of relevant legislation and procedural requirements across family legal areas.
Clear Communication
We write and speak plainly. Legal processes can be opaque; our role includes translating procedural complexity into terms that allow our clients to make informed decisions with confidence.
Realistic Timelines
We do not make representations about how quickly a matter will conclude. We give honest assessments of what drives timelines and keep clients informed as matters progress.
Cross-Border Awareness
Many of our clients have connections to more than one country. We are familiar with how Thai family law intersects with international frameworks, and we flag jurisdictional considerations early.
Our Values
Family legal counsel in Thailand draws on a specific body of law — the Civil and Commercial Code, the Child Adoption Act, and the Land Code among others — that intersects differently depending on whether those involved are Thai nationals, foreign nationals, or a combination. Bua Counsel has developed its practice around the questions that families who live or have connections in northern Thailand most commonly face.
We work in English and Thai, which matters for clients from outside the country or for mixed families where legal documents will need to be understood across languages. Our process begins with a written record of your circumstances, which becomes the foundation for all subsequent work on your matter.
Our office in Chang Khlan district, Chiang Mai, is accessible by appointment on weekdays and, where needed, on Saturdays. For clients who cannot attend in person, we arrange remote consultations as a starting point, with clarity about which subsequent steps may require physical presence in Thailand.
The practice does not advertise outcomes or make comparative claims about what others in the field offer. What we can describe is the care we bring to each matter and the consistency with which we apply our process, regardless of whether a situation is relatively straightforward or involves complications across multiple areas of law.
